DeWalt Cordless Kerosene Heaters Recalled Due to Fire and Carbon Monoxide Risk
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a product recall announcement for DeWalt cordless kerosene forced-air heaters. Enerco Group, who manufactures the heaters under the DeWalt name, made the recall on February 3, which involves about 4,500 units. The issue with the heaters is that they can start unexpectedly while in standby mode, posing a risk for fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
What makes these heaters dangerous?
According to the CPSC recall notice:
This recall involves DeWALT cordless kerosene forced-air heaters model number DXH90CFAK with serial numbers 340902-20001001 through 340902-20004000 and model number DXH90CFAKM with serial numbers 340901-20001001 through 340901-20001500. The heaters have a black tank/base, a yellow body and a gray combustion barrel. “DeWALT” and “90,000 BTU” are printed in yellow on the combustion barrel. The model number and serial number are located on the side panel opposite the controls.
Enerco has received one report of a heater starting unexpectedly when it was moved while in standby. Consumer Reports noted that specifically, if the surrounding temperature in the room drops below the temperature at which the heater is set, the heater may automatically restart. Any device that produces heat and/or carbon monoxide is dangerous when placed next to flammable materials or in a room with inadequate ventilation.

Product liability law in Virginia
When consumers are injured by defective or dangerous products, they can rely on product liability law to protect them. A defect means that an element or piece of a product is inherently unsafe and poses a risk to consumers. If a manufacturer or company puts a defective product on the shelves due to their own negligence and you suffer injury, you may be able to bring a case under product liability law.
So far, the CPSC has received no reports of injuries from the recalled DeWalt heaters. This is why it is important to ensure that if a dangerous product does reach consumers, it is recalled as soon as possible.
