What is flame jetting?

Flame jetting is the cause of many of the injuries associated with tabletop fire pits. It occurs when a high-pressure burst of fire erupts from a fire pit. This issue often happens when alcohol-based fuel is added to a flame before the flame is completely extinguished. The CPSC even posted a video to illustrate the dangers and devastating effects of fuel jetting. Oftentimes, the fuel container’s design is a major contributing factor in these incidents.

Unfortunately, when flame jetting occurs, it can cause a fire to spread quickly in the surrounding area, and may even catch nearby people on fire. The path of the flames may be unpredictable as well, leading to a rapidly spreading and chaotic fire that can cause personal injuries, deaths, and significant property damage.

Brands involved in recalls and consumer warnings

FLIKRFIRE and Colsen fire pits are both subject to consumer warnings over concerns about fire jetting. Here is some of the information about these warnings and the risks associated with these fire pits.

FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urged consumers to stop using these fire pits immediately following reports of two deaths and multiple severe injuries associated with FLIKRFIRE’s devices. According to the CPSC, the fire pits violate voluntary safety standards for flame arrestors, which contributed to the flame jetting.

Colsen Fire Pits

The CPSC also issued a recall of Colsen’s fire pits over the risk of flame jetting and quickly spreading fires related to these products. Many injuries appear to have resulted from these fire pits as well, including some severe burns.

Why fuel bottle design matters

One of the main issues is a lack of flame arrestors in the alcohol fuel bottles themselves. The issue has less to do with the design of the actual pit. Flame arrestors are meant to prevent ignition from traveling into the fuel container when a person is refueling their fire. Many of the injuries associated with fire pits occur during refueling. If the fire pit is still lit or warm, the ignition may travel into the container causing flame jetting.

Consumer alerts & warnings

The CPSC issued its warning to include any liquid fuel fire pits that neglect to follow proper safety standards. Health Canada also issued its own warning, and stated that consumers should avoid using rubbing alcohol as fuel for their tabletop fire pits. Instead of relying on liquid fuel, they recommend using a nonrefillable gel fuel canister, as these are safer.

What types of injuries do fire pit accidents cause?

Victims of fire pit accidents may suffer the following injuries:

  • Burns, ranging from first-degree to life-threatening third-degree burns.
  • Smoke inhalation, which can lead to respiratory issues.
  • Scarring and disfigurement, which requires long-term medical care.
  • Emotional trauma.

Many of these injuries lead to extremely costly medical care and potentially life-long complications.
