UPDATE: Graco Inclined Rocker Accessory Recalled for Suffocation Risks
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for inclined sleepers associated with Graco Pack ‘n Plays. Inclined sleepers have a potential risk for suffocation if infants roll onto their stomachs while in the sleeper. The current recall affects the following products:
- Graco Pack ‘n Play Day2Dream Playard with Bedside Sleeper, model numbers 2034085, 2048753 and 2053215
- Graco Pack ‘n Play Nuzzle Nest Playard, model numbers 1947177 and 1896392
- Graco Pack ‘n Play Everest Playard, model numbers 1946902 and 1946903
- Graco Pack ‘n Play Rock ‘n Grow Playard, model number 2105055
Per the CPSC, the recall only affects the inclined sleeper accessory; all customers are advised to immediately stop using the sleeper, and to contact Graco for a refund or call 800.345.4109 to speak to someone handling refunds related to the recall.
More than 165,000 reclined infant sleepers were recently recalled by four different companies due to a suffocation risk. This comes on the heels of an April 12, 2019 recall of almost 5 million Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleepers, after Consumer Reports uncovered over 30 infant deaths over the span of 10 years in that product, and an April 26, 2019 recall of all models of Kids II Rocking Sleepers after Consumer Reports uncovered 4 infant deaths in that product.
More infant rockers recalled due to safety risks: what you should know
More than 165,000 reclined infant sleepers were recently recalled by four different companies due to a suffocation risk. In March 2020, Consumer Reports updated that number to 92 infant fatalities.
As of the current recall, no injuries have been reported in the products listed below, but officials urge consumers to immediately stop using them. They are:
- Summer Infant’s SwaddleMe,By Your Bed Sleeper, Model number 91394

These rockers were sold nationwide at retail stores like Target and Walmart, as well as through online retailers like Amazon.
The problem with rocking baby sleepers
As you can see by the product names above, although they have names like “rocker,” “sleeper” or “napper,” these types of baby seats are not safe for sleeping. Because the seat is on an incline, sleeping infants are at risk of pushing up the back of the chair and/or rolling over from their backs to their stomachs, experiencing fatal suffocation or airway compression.
Dr. David Fagan, vice chairman of pediatrics at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y., told the New York Times, “We would never recommend any of these products.” He explained that research has shown that putting babies to sleep on their backs on a flat, non-inclined and firm surface drastically reduces the chances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Why are these rockers and sleepers still on the market?
Concerns about inclined baby rockers have been swirling around consumer safety organizations for years. Both Fisher-Price and Kids II recalled their own inclined sleepers in 2019, and there are ongoing lawsuits, yet other manufacturers continue to sell their own sleepers and rockers. And although medical evidence shows the danger of these products, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not yet taken action.
It’s worth noting that, as of December 2019, both Amazon and eBay have banned the sale of inclined sleepers on their websites.
